Oft sind es drei oder mehr separate Ideen, die dann kombiniert werden. Erst in längeren, über das Spiel erprobten Prozessen werden komplette Stücke daraus. Nicht selten entfernt sich der Song während dieser Metamorphose so weit von der ursprünglichen Idee, dass am Ende ein ganz anderes Stück draus wird, als anfangs gedacht. Gerade diese Unvoreingenommenheit für das musikalische Resultat macht eben auch die Lebensnähe der Musik von Evelyn Kryger aus.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDas Konzert auf der JazzBaltica war kaum mit anderen Spielsituationen zu vergleichen, weil die Band – dem Lockdown geschuldet – ein ganzes Jahr nicht mehr vor Publikum aufgetreten war. Das Gefühl von inbrünstiger Erlösung ist in jedem einzelnen Moment zu spüren. Da stehen musikantische Persönlichkeiten auf der Bühne, deren Lebensinhalt es ist, auf einer Bühne vor Menschen zu spielen, dies aber viel zu lange nicht mehr durften und konnten. Die Band ist total bei und in sich, aber ebenso komplett beim und für das Publikum da. Das Quartett Evelyn Kryger aus Hannover, Köln und Hildesheim zeigt auf seinem neuen Album „III“ jedenfalls mit Bravour, dass man in ein Projekt alles reinhauen kann, was man hat, um am Ende sogar noch mehr rauszukriegen, als man glaubte. Und das ist gut so.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDoch der Reihe nach. Nach ihrem Live-Album „Live At JazzBaltica 2021“ mussten Saxofonist Christoph „Cito“ Kaling, Keyboarder Arne Dreske, Bassist Jonas Holland-Moritz und Schlagzeuger Hannes Dunker den Ausstieg von Geigerin Rebecca Czech hinnehmen. Sollte man nach dem zunächst schmerzlichen Verlust nun nach einer neuen Geigerin Ausschau halten, um die Leerstelle passgerecht auszufüllen? Oder würde vielleicht ein anderes Instrument einen neuen Akzent setzen? Die vier Überzeugungstäter entschieden sich für einen anderen Weg. Sie überdachten ihr gesamtes Bandkonzept und gingen konsequent über Start.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e„III“ ist ein radikaler Neuanfang, ohne die auf dem bisherigen Weg erlangten Kernkompetenzen aus der Hand zu geben. Vier Individualisten, die aus der Gegensätzlichkeit ihrer persönlichen Erfahrungen, Vorlieben und Arbeitsweisen einen logischen Fluss der Ereignisse destillieren, der sich am Ende über jede Definition hinwegsetzt und stets zu anderen Zielen führt, als am Anfang anvisiert. Ohne es in dieser Weise geplant zu haben, ist Evelyn Kryger ein monumental anmutendes Gesamtwerk gelungen, ein epischer Klangfilm, der Züge eines Konzeptalbums trägt. Dabei ergaben sich Dramaturgie, Ablauf und Klangregie erst während der unmittelbaren Arbeit an dem Album.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNur das Casting erfolgte unter genau festgelegten Kriterien vor Beginn der Produktion, und das ist der entscheidende Unterschied zu allen bisherigen Alben der Band. Denn man setzte diesmal nicht auf eine feste Besetzung, die auf dem kompletten Album zu hören ist und dann auch so auf Tour gehen würde, sondern umgab sich mit einer variablen Schar von Gästen, die in den unterschiedlichen Songs für individuelle Timbres und Schattierungen, Spannungsmomente oder Richtungswechsel sorgten. Gitarrist Omar Gudjonsson, bestens bekannt von der isländischen Postrock-Band ADHD, schwebte den Jungs von Evelyn Kryger schon lange als Gast vor. Ungewohnte vokale Akzente setzt die brasilianische Rapperin Laíz, die den Flow und die Dringlichkeit des HipHop mit der Power und Wucht lateinamerikanischer Rhytmen verbindet. Trompeter Tom Trabandt und Saxofonist Richard Häckel kommen wie Evelyn Kryger aus der Jazzszene von Hannover. Zur rhythmischen Pointierung trägt der venezolanische Perkussionist Nené Vásquez bei. Zu guter letzt soll im Gesamtbild von Evelyn Kryger auch der vertraute Sound der Geige nicht fehlen. In dem Amerikaner Roland Satterwhite, der unter anderem in der Berliner Jazzrock-Band Tolyqyn spielt, fand man die passende Stimme.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eViele Namen, doch hier geht es nicht um Masse, sondern um Passgenauigkeit. Denn – und das ist die große Leistung von Evelyn Kryger – keiner dieser Beiträge klingt wie ein Gimmick oder ragt aus dem Sound des Albums besonders heraus. Jeder fügt sich in den logischen Strom des Gesamtkonzepts ein, als wäre er schon immer Bestandteil der Band gewesen. Ein höheres Maß an Integrationsfähigkeit ist kaum vorstellbar, als wäre die Band das Tal und die Gäste der Fluss, der durch das Tal hindurchfließt. Evelyn Kryger arbeitet bewusst mit Gegensätzen, die jedoch stets zur Einheit geführt werden. Keiner der Songs ist in diesem Kontext auch nur ein My anders vorstellbar, als er hier zu Gehör gebracht wird.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEntsprechend groß wie die Besetzungsliste ist auch die stilistische Vielfalt der CD. Das Spektrum reicht von Jazz- und Progrock, über soundtrackartige Passagen, Popanleihen, Latin Grooves, folkloristische Färbungen bis zur Präzision und Dichte der Klassik und der losgelösten Offenheit des Jam Rock. Grenzen zwischen diesen Momenten gibt es nicht. In jedem Song ergießt sich ein neues Füllhorn von wundervollen Melodien. Ähnlich wie in den besten Momenten von Return To Forever, der Pat Metheny Group, Nils Petter Molvaer oder ADHD fließen all diese Einflüsse und Hintergründe zu einem harmonischen Ganzen zusammen, das keiner Kategorisierung mehr bedarf. Denn Eines wird vom ersten Ton an klar und zieht sich bis zum letzten Takt: Dies ist immer und ausschließlich ein Statement von Evelyn Kryger. Dabei kommt der Band eine Besonderheit zugute, die Saxofonist Cito Kaling schon anlässlich des letzten Albums „Live At JazzBaltica 2021“ wie folgt formulierte: „Wir sind eine Band von Individualisten, die trotzdem einen sehr homogenen Bandsound hat. Wir alle bringen unsere Instrumente aus dem Jazz mit, ohne wirklich wie eine Jazzband zu funktionieren. Unsere Charaktere und persönlichen Spielweisen verweben sich innerhalb der Band zu einem gemeinsamen Klang.“\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFernab jeder wie auch immer umrissenen stilistisch-musikalischen Festlegung wirkt „III“ wie ein Film. Stimmen werden zu Charakteren, Songs zu Szenen eines Plots mit offenem Ausgang, Sounds zu Kulissen, Grooves zu Leitplanken von Handlungssträngen. Man sitzt gebannt im imaginären Kinosessel und folgt der narrativen Bilderwelt, die Evelyn Kryger vor dem sehenden Ohr entfesselt. Jeder Farbtupfer, jeder Taktschlag, jede Note und jedes gesungene Wort ergeben in dieser Welt der überbordenden Eindrücke Sinn. „III“ ist groß, doch es muss genau so groß sein, um diese überwältigende Wirkung zu erzielen. Zum finalen audiovisuellen Effekt des Albums trägt auch das von der Hannoveraner Künstlerin Anna Abramovich gestaltete Cover bei, das als Pentagon unabhängig von der Musik schon für sich ein Kunstwerk bildet.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eVorsicht vor Superlativen, aber das mit „III“ betitelte vierte Album von Evelyn Kryger ist eine der komplettesten musikalischen Kostbarkeiten der letzten Jahre. Das ist nicht einfach eine Studioproduktion, sondern im allerbesten Sinne eine Aufführung. Ohne hier weiteres Namedropping betreiben zu wollen, braucht es keinen Vergleich mit den ganz großen Konzeptalben der Rock- und Jazzgeschichte zu scheuen.
